Freemasonry’s roots in Bulgaria trace back to the early 18th century. Between 1805 and 1807, a Masonic lodge operated in Vidin. In the 1830s, Archimandrite Efrem attempted to establish a lodge in Ruse, marking significant early Masonic activities in the region.
On November 27, 1917, the Grand Lodge of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite was established in Bulgaria, with General Protogerov serving as the first Grand Master.
After World War II, Freemasonry in Bulgaria was suppressed under the communist regime, and attempts to revive it began in 1991.
In 2013, the Grand Lodge of AASR in Bulgaria was officially installed, uniting several lodges under a common vision. The organization adheres strictly to the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Ritual in the first three Symbolic Degrees of Freemasonry. Our Grand Lodge maintains autonomous authority, ensuring the preservation of traditional Masonic values and practices.
